In addition to making flower pillows….my mom has also been working on reupholstering her furniture in her living room. She has a couch, love seat, and chair which she purchased 10 years ago…all coordinating pieces. She was tired of the floral print & was ready for something new, but didn’t want to spend the money to buy new furniture.
So…she decided to reupholster her existing furniture instead!
Even when shopping for fabric to reupholster furniture…you can really get into spending a lot of money. So, my mom starting researching on the internet about furniture reupholstering and came across Miss Mustard Seed. She has all kinds of great info when it comes to refinishing & reupholstering furniture. If you have never visited her site…you should definitely take a few minutes & check it out, especially if you are ready to do some refinishing or reupholstering of your own! She has great tips!
While browsing thru Miss Mustard Seed’s site….my mom came across a post on reupholstering with paint drop cloths! This was perfect considering she was wanting an off-white couch, not to mention drop cloths are inexpensive!
So, the transformation began….
This is a sneek peek at what the couch looked like before with the floral print…
(these pics were taken with my mom’s cell phone, sorry about the quality!)
She started out by bleaching the drop cloths per Miss Mustard Seed’s advice & then measured and cut the drop cloth to fit the couch….
She then pinned the pieces and sewed them together….
And this is what the couch looks like now….
How fabulous does this look!?!
She said she ended up using 3.5 packages of drop cloths. They come 6 foot by 9 foot and are about $10 per package. So for $40 she has a completely new couch & a great new look! She will be doing the same thing to her loveseat & chair…I will post pics of them as soon as they are completed!
Any of you out there tired of your worn out couch?
Maybe its not worn out, but just not in style anymore….
Consider using paint drop cloths to give your couch a facelift!
I’m sitting here with my jaw on the floor! Unbelievable! I am just awestruck at how gorgeous this couch is and how inexpensive it was to do it. But I have to say, you and your mom share a unique talent for this type of thing and I don’t think I could do it by myself. Love your blog 🙂
Your Mom did an awesome job on that sofa! it looks so professional! I love it when you take something thats old and blah before and restore it to something that will be loved and used!
Kim:)
OH MY WOW!! She did an amazing job!!! I have a chair that I would like to make a slipcover for but I am chicken because I can’t sew! 🙂 I never thought to bleach the drop cloth, I really should pay more attention when I read Miss Mustard Seeds posts! 🙂 Love it lots!!!!
Have a wonderful weekend!!
Wow! That turned out fabulous!! …and for *$40*..wow!!
That looks incredible!!! I am getting ready to do the couch in my guest house with drop cloths…I think. I keep putting that project off. 🙂
Can’t wait to see the other pieces.
Blessings,
Traci
It looks fabulous!! I tell you, it’s addicting. All of her furniture will be covered in drop cloths by the end of it. It is so cheap and so chic. Thanks for sharing and for the link!
Look how cute you 2 are!! what a gift to enjoy your talents together…thanks for stoppin’ by!
much love, J.

I say it looks like she has a new 1200 dollar pottery barn piece! Way to go, love it absolutely love this transoformation.
Wow, incredible transformation!
Now this is fabulous!! I use to have that same exact sofa. I wish I would have been as talented as you and made it into something wonderful!! Great job and cute blog. New follower.= ))
Unbelievable! What an amazing job she did. It looks like a pro did it and charged a small fortune for it. I bow down to her skills.
Wow! What an amazing idea & transformation! She did a fab job! I love your blog and will definitely be back!
Looks great! I was checking out some of Mustard Seed’s slipcover videos, I’ve bookmarked them for when I can actually carve the project into my schedule. I spent a bunch of money on a “fitted” slipcover and it never looks quite right & is a real pain to put on! I’ve been wanting to make my own better-fitting one for a while now. White-ish is the color I want (and have now), anyway (easy to clean with bleach to get puppy prints off of it), so I may go the dropcloth route. Who’d a thought! Anyway, your Mom’s couch turned out great. SO much better than before. I wanted to ask, though, was she able to do that without having a tie in the back? I wasn’t sure if perhaps because it didn’t have the “wings” of a wingback chair (as in MS’s video) it might be doable. Or maybe ties/snaps/zips somewhere else? Thanks!
