I have a fabulous giveaway for y’all today! But, before we get to that, I wanted to share with you how I made the outdoor curtains for our pergola. For this project, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape & The Home Depot. They currently have a Ready, Set, Paint event going on & there are lots of fabulous & talented DIY bloggers participating. In addition to the event, they are also hosting a Blog Hop which features all of the wonderful projects from the campaign.
I knew in the midst of building our pergola that I wanted to hang curtains from it. I had seen so many inspirng pergolas on Pinterest (most of which had curtains) and I just fell in love with the look! The curtains add so much to our outdoor space & really make it feel more like a room!
For this project, I headed to Walmart to pick up some bedsheets…..Yes, bedsheets!
I’ve learned from my mom, that these bedsheets from Walmart are fabulous for so many projects. They are especially fabulous for curtains! Not only do you get a whole lot of fabric for a very small price, but the sheets are already hemmed!! BONUS!! To get the length that I needed I had to go with queen size sheets. The sheets were 96″ wide, so I decided that I could get two panels out of each sheet. I needed 8 curtain panels, so I purchased 4 queen size bedsheets. The sheets were just under $12.00 a piece.I cut the sheets in half & then enlisted the help of my mom to add a new hem. We folded the sheet on the cut side & ironed a very small crease in it to prep it for sewing.
In addition to adding the new hem, my mom also sewed 5 button holes along the top of the sheet/curtain panel. The button holes would be used later to hang the curtains.
I could have hung up plain tan curtains, but I decided that might be a little boring! So, I decided to add some stripes! This is where Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape came to my rescue!
I taped off the bottom of the curtain (leaving the hem exposed) and used the hem as my guide.
Once I had my first strip of Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape down, I had to figure out how wide I wanted my first stripe to be. I decided to go 4″ wide for the first stripe. So, I took my measuring tape & an ink pen and measured from the top of the tape up four inches and made a tiny mark. I did this down the entire width of the curtain.
Once the second strip of Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape was down, I started prepping for the second stripe. I went up one inch from the top of the second tape strip & made another mark, this would be the gap between the two stripes. Then I went up two more inches from that mark, this would be the second stripe. Again, I made these marks down the entire width of the curtain to make a line/path for my Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape.
I made sure that the Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape was pressed firmly into the fabric before I began painting. I went with chocolate brown & black paint colors for the stripes to coordinate with our outdoor throw pillows. I applied the paint to the fabric using a sponge brush.
You’ll want to make sure to put a piece of cardboard under the fabric just in case some paint decides to “bleed” through.
Once the paint was dry, I began peeling off my Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape
Love that crisp, straight line!!
Once your tape is off, it’s time to hang your curtain panel. I told you earlier in the post, that my mom sewed button holes along the top of the panel to make for easy hanging. We used the white mug hooks that I pick up at Walmart, screwed them into the pergola, & hung our curtains! Easy peasy!!
To tie back the curtain panels, I just used a wide black ribbon & thumb tacks.
I just love the way the curtains turned out! The black & brown striped detail on the bottom really adds so much! Thank you Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape!
