Hey Friends!
I’m so excited for this week’s “Thrift It” challenge!
Today, I thought I would share my project for the challenge. I made several trips to Goodwill & a couple of our other local thrift shops, over the course of the last few weeks in preparation for this challenge. I did manage to find a few things, but nothing that I could really “upcycle” or makeover for this week’s challenge. I was starting to getting discouraged.
Then, I remembered that my mom had purchased a desk at Goodwill couple months back. She was using it as a sewing desk and had been wanting to paint it, but she just hadn’t had the time. So, being the good daughter that I am, I offered to paint it for her! 🙂
Here’s a look at her Goodwill Desk Makeover….
What do you think?! Pretty cute, right?!
Let’s take a look at the desk before…..
My mom purchased it for $30.00. It had a really cute shape & I loved the hardware on it, but you can see from the picture, it needed a little love!
So, I took all the drawers out, removed all the hardware, and sanded it all down. Â Then I gave it a couple coats of primer.
I had fun a lot of fun styling the desk & taking the photos for this reveal post, so forgive me as we go into image overload here…..
My mom has TONS of little knicks knacks all thru her house, so I borrowed some to make her desk look pretty. I’m gonna stop talking now & just let you enjoy the photos….
Here is another look at the before & after…..
I just love it’s crisp, clean new look! Â Isn’t it amazing what a little paint can do?!
Have you ever scored a great furniture piece at Goodwill or a yard sale? Â I’d love to hear about it!!
I hope you enjoyed this project!!

what an amazing transformation. Your photos are great too!
I love it, you did a great job. I bet your Mom was happy!!
Your mom just has to be over the moon with happiness because you did such a fine job on the desk! I’m going to start redoing a desk that I found last spring in a dumpster! Love your pictures too!
Mom is happy!!!! I love anything white with that cottage feel. Now I want to finish that room along with some others, just wish I had the time to do it! Maybe Tonya will be in need for some more projects for her blog!!! Thanks Tonya!!! I really love it!!!
I got a nightstand for $25 on our local Buy, Sell, Trade page on Facebook a while back, but wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. The previous owner had painted it a lime green and then tried to whitewash it or something. It looked horrible. I let it sit around for a few weeks as I tried to think of what to do with it/where to put it. (My hubs gets frustrated with me because I like to buy furniture but we really have nowhere to put it!) Then I found one that was similar in size at Christian Mission for $15. It was old and scuffed up, etc. Long story short, I decided to replace my living room end tables with the nightstands. They both have two drawers, and we could use the storage in there (a.k.a. a place to hide hubby’s “junk” that he leaves laying around which drives me nuts!). So I painted them a creamy white and poly’ed them. I LOVE how they turned out!
Aw, look how pretty she is now!! Beautiful job — and yes, I learned my lesson about white paint + poly the HARD way… good info, Tonya. 🙂

This turned out awesome! And you were all worried…psst! I never find anything cool like these at Goodwill! JEALOUS!
It looks so great! Nice job – what a great daughter you are!
I have a very similar desk that I re-painted black for my office. It wasn’t a fun project (spray lacquer really stinks) but it turned out well, and I love having a real desk with drawers.
so pretty! what a bright little corner you have created!
love it! will you come wave your magic want at my house? BEAUTIFUL!!!
What a fun project… it turned out great. I am just amazed at the before and after photos! I am sure you’re Mom was so happy!
looooove how this desk turned out! You are a pro 🙂 & seriously your photos are gorgeous! Will you come over and teach me how to use mine and we can have fun taking some pics together!!
OH Tonya! This is so beautiful. I love that you painted this for your mom, that makes it so special. I love how you styled everything, it’s really beautiful!
It’s just perfect…and the thought even more beautiful…xo
Gorgeous!
It turned out gorgeous Tonya! Great job!
So pretty. I have a small night stand that I painted white with gray detailing. I, too used a foam roller and a semi gloss paint. It all came out good, except for the top. It has kind of a bumpy, orange peel texture to it. What do you think I did wrong, and how do you get that nice smooth shiny finish, on the top especially?
LOVE this!
Joined up for the party – and am now happily following you
Hugs,
Suzan
Gorgeous! I love this!!
This is so pretty! I love the new look!! Thanks for hosting the linky parties!
Stunning – love the white in the bright room! Great find and refinish.
Soooo cute. Thank you for the tutorial, I’m pinning it in case I ever find a thrift store treasure to fix.
Looks great! What a transformation!!
Beautiful! The desk looks so clean and fresh now, I love it!
i really love this. i have a similar desk, never thought about ever doing anything to do, but this would be perfect. is that a true white-white? do you mind sharing what paint/color you used? and did you do anything to the pulls? great job
So fun! You did such a good job!
Looks fantastic! You did a great job. I wish I had a garage to work in, I have some pieces that need to be refinished.
Take care,
KC
Beautiful and absolutely inspiring room! Thanks for sharing all the great pictures!
I love it Tonya, Its always fun to see what you are up to. Love the all the styling photos.
Have a great week.

What a find, and you made it amazing! I love the white with the dark handles. I’d sit at this desk all day! Thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful day!
I have a little dressing table that looks a lot like this. I just sanded it and am getting it ready for primer. The hardware looks almost identical to this. Did you do anything to your hardware?? Clean it, treat it, paint it???? Mine is in good condition, but looks a little dingy. I am wondering about painting it?
Thanks. Amy
What a beautiful desk! LOVE it!
Beautiful! Makes we want a sewing desk 🙂

Beautiful desk. I love how it turned out. I painted a changing table for my sister but forgot to take after pictures.

Ugh…it’s gorgeous. I now have desk envy. Loving the dark hardware against the creamy paint. 🙂

Sweet styling for sure and I love the white makeover. I have a very similar desk I found on the side of the road that is a swirly green color. I’ve been trying to decide whether to go white or not and you have given me a look into what my desk’s white future could be. Thanks! I love it!

Holy cow – this is GORGEOUS!! Seriously, I am obsessed with this transformation. We need a new desk bad, and we can’t find one that we like. I think I’m going to have to hunt the Goodwill stores asap now. I want a double desk, though, but seeing your desk totally gave me an idea – it’d be a long shot, but if I could find two of the same desk, I could just push them together. It may take a little DIY-ing, but it could totally work. Again – the desk is beautiful.
Oh my gosh that desk is beautiful!!…you did an excellent job…It’s so pretty in that room the way you have it set up. I’m constantly remaking small and large furniture with a good paint job…just posted a little side table yesterday…come on over and visit…always enjoy your blog. Have a great day, Mariaelena
It turned out so beautiful! Totally jealous that you could find a desk like that for $30 at the Goodwill. I love that hardware!
Tonya, I wish you lived closer…I have an old drop leaf table that I use for my 2 of my sewing machines, but it is AWEFUL!!! It has scratches, dents and tons of those white heat rings all over the top….I’d love to “let” you refinish it 😉 Some day I’ll find the time, you’ve provided me with the inspiration!
I redid a desk very similar for my 7 year old this summer! I love how yours came out! As for styling for the photos, she snuck under it for the picture – I guess we don’t quite have your touch.

This is BEAUTIFUL! You’ve inspired me to refinish my home office desk. Can you give more information on the type of primer and paint you used? How do you plan to seal it? Also, did you refinish/repaint the hardware or does it just pop more because of the crisp new paint color?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this desk! The white is SO fresh and bright and that dark hardware just totally sets it off! Can’t wait to share it with my favorite things tomorrow at http://www.makingitinthemountains.com! Wishing you SUCH a fabulous weekend!
Thanks so much for the feature Kristi!!
