DIY Sunburst Mirror

Hey Friends!

I hope you all are having a great weekend! The weather here is gloomy, with rain off & on today. I am fighting the urge to take a nap instead of writing this post!! This week is week three of our Dog Days of Winter Series. The theme this week is “Make It.”

“Make It” week is all about choosing a project you’ve pinned from Pinterest & actually making it! I don’t know about you all, but I have a ton of craft/DIY projects pinned, but have made only a hand few of those items. I’m sure the majority of you are guilty of this as well.  Well, this week is all about taking action & making those things you’ve been wanting to make for months now!

For me, it was this project: DIY Sunburst Mirror

DIY Sunburst Mirror

I know I’m like a year (or more) behind on the sunburst mirror phenomenon. I’ve always loved the way they look & now that I’ve been doing some work in my master bedroom, I thought maybe I could use one in that space.

These pins were my inspiration for the project:

Knockoff Sunburst Mirror via Thrifty Decor Chick

For the most part, I followed Kate’s tutorial for my sunburst mirror. However, the Lowe’s store in our area wasn’t willing to handover the number of paint sticks that I need for the project even though I offered to pay for them.  So, I had to come up with a different solution. Then I remembered that Sarah had used shims for her mirror, so I decided to do the same.

DIY Sunburst MIrror
Supplies:
7″ Round Mirror
Embroidery Hoop
Gorilla Glue
Craft Paint
Piece of Scrap Wood
1 Package Wood Shims
Sawtooth Picture Hanger
Paint Brush (not pictured)
Hot Glue/Hot Glue Gun (not pictured)
I started off by attaching my mirror to the scrap piece of wood using gorilla glue. Then, I sat the mirror aside & let it dry thoroughly. Once it was dry, I added the sawtooth picture hanger to the backside of the scrap wood so I would be able to hang it later. Then, I started figuring out the arrangement of the shims.

Once I knew how the shims would be arranged & how many I needed (I used 32 total), I began sanding them down.

Once all of the edges of the shims were all smooth, I began painting them.  I followed Kate’s lead here & went with metallic sahara gold & metallic taupe craft paints from Folk Art. I painted half of them sahara gold & the other half taupe. I gave them all two coats.

When they were dry, I began attaching them to the scrap wood around the perimeter of the mirror using hot glue.

After the first set of shims were on, then I added the embroidery hoop to frame out the mirror. You’ll use just the inside hoop for your frame. I painted the hoop in metallic taupe & then adhered it to the mirror using the gorilla glue. I sat a heavy book on top of the hoop & let it dry for a good hour.

Once it was dry, I grabbed my hot glue gun again & added the second round of shims (in metallic taupe) to the mirror.

You’ll notice in this picture that the lighter colored shims are shorter than the darker ones. I had my hubby trim 2″off each one of them to create the alternating lengths.
Once that was done, it was time to hang it on the wall! 🙂

I’ve only been sharing sneak peeks of my master bedroom thus far….it is still a work in progress & I have a few more things I am wanting to do before I show you the full room.

  4. Yes I’m guilty of this too, seeing so many DIY thing’s I fancy and never going ahead and trying to make them. I think my first DIY will be a nail polish rack as I’m in need of storage so I’m going to make a display/bookcase shelf and varnish or paint it and a mirror like this would look fantastic above it. There are so many great apps on the Mac App store now like a spirit level etc so I should be able to do it using those apps. Thanks for posting this I hope to do this soon and I’ll definitely let you know so you can see how mine turned out. I was really inspired by your post so I pinned it and I shared it on my facebook page.

Love this post!! I created this sunburst mirror yesterday and it turned out beautifully! Thanks for sharing — my only problem was that I forgot to nail the picture hook before I glued the mirror so I ended up with a small crack on the side of the mirror. Still looks beautiful though. I can’t wait to hang it over my DIY headboard! Thanks again!
